Are you looking to join the ever-growing community of viewers embracing free-to-air satellite TV? If so, you’ll need the right equipment to get started.

Fortunately, setting up your own satellite TV system is easier than you might think. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know about the equipment required for free-to-air satellite TV, ensuring you enjoy high-quality channels like movies, international news, and documentaries.

Why Choose Free-to-Air Satellite TV?

There are hundreds of free-to-air (FTA) satellite TV channels globally that you can access legally with the right equipment. In Kenya, popular free-to-air satellite TV channels include NTV, K24, KTN, Citizen, KBC, and Kiss.

It’s fairly easy to set up a connection and enjoy a diverse range of programming that covers movies, news, fashion, entertainment, children’s entertainment, education, travel, nature, and much more.

I strongly recommend hiring a professional installer, as the setup can be slightly technical. Most DStv satellite installers also provide FTA installation services for clients.

One of the best FTA satellites for Kenya is Nilesat102/201, located at 7° West (KU Band Beam), offering over300 channels.

Popular channels include MBC1,2,3, and4, which showcase movies and entertainment in English, alongside ONE TV, MBC Action, and Al Jazeera News, although many channels broadcast in Arabic. For a comprehensive list of available satellites, check out Lyngsat.com.

Essential Equipment for Free-to-Air Satellite TVTo get started, here’s a list of the essential equipment you’ll need:

1. Satellite Dish

You can purchase a satellite dish at electronic shops in downtown Nairobi. The dish size is crucial for signal strength, with larger dishes generally providing better reception.

2. FTA Receiver

An FTA receiver is necessary for decoding the satellite signals, and these are also available in downtown Nairobi.

3. Coaxial Cable

Get a sufficient length of coaxial cable to run from your roof to your TV. A 6 ft coaxial cable is typically needed as well.

4. Mounting Supplies

You will need steel nails or screws to mount your satellite dish securely. Other supplies include masking tape, a box of cable clips, a hammer, and a ladder.

5. Satellite Finder and Compass

If you choose to install the system yourself, a satellite finder and compass will be beneficial. However, if you’re hiring a professional installer, they will have their own tools for the job.

Instructions to Set Up Free Satellite TVFollow these steps to correctly install your FTA satellite system:

  1. Run the Coaxial Cable: Use the cable clips and hammer to attach the coaxial cable from the FTA receiver to your roof. Try to run the cable along a wall that is insulated from human interference.
  2. Mount the Dish: Securely mount your satellite dish on your roof, pointing it in the direction of your preferred satellite. Use the compass to determine the correct orientation based on satellite position information (refer to Lyngsat.com). Ensure the dish is tightly mounted with steel nails or screws to withstand adverse weather.
  3. Connect the Coaxial Cable: Connect one end of the6 ft coaxial cable to the satellite finder and the other end to the LNB (Low Noise Block) on the satellite dish.
  4. Align the Dish: Switch on the satellite finder, enter the satellite name, and download the frequency number. The satellite finder will beep intermittently. Slowly rotate the dish and listen for changes in the beeping; a quicker interval indicates you’re moving in the right direction.
  5. Fine-Tuning: Adjust the vertical angle in the same manner until you achieve a continuous beeping sound, indicating optimal alignment for signal quality. Secure all adjustments tightly.
  6. Connect to the Receiver: Attach your coaxial cable to the LNB and the other end to your FTA receiver. Use masking tape to secure any loose cables, as they can affect your signal quality.
  7. Finalize Setup: Switch on the FTA receiver and TV. After initialization, press ‘menu’ on the receiver’s remote, navigate to ‘settings’ to select your satellite (e.g., NileSat), and initiate a channel search. Flip through the channels to ensure you are receiving all available FTA channels.

Tips & Warnings- Ensure there are no physical barriers blocking the line of sight to the satellite (like trees or buildings).

  • Consider engaging a professional installer for best results; installation fees typically range from KES2,000 to3,000.
  • Look out for the new Samsung LED TV Free Satellite, which offers a built-in satellite TV receiver, allowing access to over60 SES FTA channels. Total installation costs for this system range from KES15,000 to 20,000.

With this essential equipment and guidance, you’re ready to enjoy a wide array of free-to-air satellite TV channels.

Whether you love movies or want to stay informed with international news, your satellite setup will unlock a world of entertainment.
